The NHTSA to discuss drugged driving

Connecticut motorists may be pleased to learn about the steps that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking to stop people who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs. In part because of the legalization of marijuana and the rampant opioid use in the United States, there is a urgency to address the increase in drugged driving accidents.

The NHTSA is hosting a conference on March 15, 2018, to start a national conversation. The event is part of the agency's effort to create innovative solutions to enhance safety and lower the number of deaths that result from motor vehicle accidents.

A number of key stakeholders have been invited to join resources with the United States Department of Transportation to properly tackle the issue of driving while under the influence of drugs that is plaguing the country. Some of them include law enforcement, toxicologists, local and state elected officials, drug recognition specialists, safety partners and data and policy professionals.

During the summit, the agency will examine the best ways for informing the public about the risks associated with drug-impaired driving. Also to be addressed during the summit are the best practices for the enforcement of driving under the influence of drugs laws, the assessment and measuring of the levels of drug impairment, the tracking of DUID data and the collection of reliable data.

A personal injury attorney may advise clients who have been injured in car accidents about what legal avenues they may pursue to obtain financial compensation to which they may be entitled. Drivers whose negligent behaviors, such as driving while drunk, drugged, drowsy or distracted, may be held liable for the resulting losses.
